But then you land in a Facebook crochet group or binge-watch TikTok tutorials and suddenly folks are tossing around terms like FO, WIP, frog, yarn chicken, and stitch btch like it’s a secret language—and you’re just out here blinking like “Umm… English?”

Here’s your no-fluff, all-fun, totally uncensored intro to the wild world of crochet slang and acronyms. Bookmark it. Print it. Tattoo it on your arm. Whatever helps.

🧶 Crochet Hooker Lingo 101

WIP – Work In Progress  

The project you’re currently working on… or abandoned two months ago because a new yarn color seduced you.  

🗣 “I’ve got 6 WIPs and no shame.”

FO – Finished Object

That rare, magical moment when you actually complete a project. Should be celebrated with wine.  

🗣 “I finally have an FO! Tell the group chat!”

UFO – Un-Finished Object  

A project you shoved in a bag, under the bed, or into the craft closet because you got bored, mad, or distracted.  

🗣 “I rediscovered a UFO from 2021. It’s vintage now.”

FROG / Frogging – Rip it, rip it (get it?)  

When you unravel your stitches because you messed up or changed your mind. Painful but necessary.  

🗣 “I had to frog the whole blanket. I’m emotionally unstable now.”

HOTH – Hot Off The Hook  

A fresh FO still radiating that new-project glow.  

🗣 “Just finished this shawl! It’s HOTH, baby!”

CAL / MAL – Crochet-Along / Make-Along  

A group project where everyone makes the same pattern together—like a cult, but cozier.  

🗣 “Starting that CAL with the girls next week. Let’s gooo!”

YARN CHICKEN

The reckless, adrenaline-fueled gamble of trying to finish a row with a maybe-almost-empty ball of yarn.  

🗣 “I’m playing yarn chicken and I’m down to 8 inches of yarn—send prayers.”

STASH  

Your collection of yarn you swear you’ll use one day but mostly just hoard like a dragon.  

🗣 “This isn’t a yarn problem, it’s a storage issue.”

STITCH DICTIONARY / STITCH LIBRARY 

A fancy way of saying “a bunch of stitch patterns to try” that makes you feel like a legit fiber artist.

Stitch Bitch  

A lovingly sassy term for your crochet bestie who keeps it real, counts your stitches, and judges your tension (with love).  

🗣 “That’s my stitch bitch, she keeps me from turning my square into a trapezoid.”

Hooker  

An oldie but goodie. A proud nickname for crocheters. Knitters might side-eye you, but you’ve earned it.  

🗣 “Just a tired hooker trying to finish this blanket before midnight.”

Time-Out Pile  

Where your sassy WIPs go to think about what they’ve done (aka where you send projects that piss you off).  

🗣 “That cardigan’s been in time-out for three months. It knows what it did.”

Yarn Barf  

When a skein of yarn betrays you by spitting out a tangled mess the size of a small toddler.  

🗣 “Opened a new skein and got a full serving of yarn barf. Delicious.”

Fiber Floozy  

Someone who flirts with all kinds of yarns and projects and never settles down.  

🗣 “I said I wouldn’t start another project but… I’m a fiber floozy, okay?”

Crojo – Crochet Mojo  

That magical motivation to crochet—when it’s gone, you’re just sitting there holding yarn and regrets.  

🗣 “My crojo left and took my will to weave in ends with it.”

Swatch Lies  

When your perfectly measured test square swears it’s gauge-correct, but then your sweater could fit a small pony.  

🗣 “I trusted the swatch. I was betrayed.”

Girthy Yarn  

We said what we said. Thick, chunky yarn that works up fast and makes you feel accomplished in 15 minutes.  

🗣 “I love a girthy yarn—it hides all my sins.”

Crochet Goblin Mode  

When you ignore all responsibilities, sit in the same spot for 6 hours, and lose feeling in your hips while crocheting.  

🗣 “Went full goblin mode and finished a blanket today. Don’t ask about my spine.”
